London’s skyline is set for a dramatic addition with the approval of a new skyscraper that will rival the Shard in height. The project, known as 1 Undershaft, has received planning permission from the City of London Corporation and will stand at an impressive 309.6 meters, matching the Shard’s towering stature.
Located in St Helen’s Square, on the former site of Aviva’s headquarters, 1 Undershaft will be situated just across the River Thames from its iconic counterpart. One of its most notable features will be Europe’s highest publicly accessible viewing gallery, offering panoramic views of the city.
Scheduled for completion in the early 2030s, the development is projected to provide approximately 13% of the office space needed in the City of London up to 2040. Beyond its commercial function, 1 Undershaft will also incorporate public spaces and cultural elements. A free public viewing area will be located on the 11th floor, while the upper floors will house a unique “classroom in the sky,” curated in partnership with the Museum of London. This educational space will offer visitors and schoolchildren the opportunity to learn about the city’s history and development from a unique vantage point.
At street level, a 12.5-meter public screen and stage will host a variety of events, including concerts, talks, sporting broadcasts, and theatrical productions, creating a vibrant public space accessible to all.
The approval marks the culmination of a nearly decade-long process, with initial plans for the site emerging almost ten years ago and the first application submitted five years later. Stanhope will lead the construction of the project, which was designed by Eric Parry Architects on behalf of Singapore’s Aroland Holdings.
Shravan Joshi, chairman of the City of London Corporation’s planning and transportation committee, emphasized the project’s contribution to both economic growth and cultural enrichment. He highlighted the high-quality office space and the enhanced tourist appeal, noting the confidence that global investors have in London’s real estate market and the wider UK economy. He also expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with the Museum of London, creating an inclusive and unique visitor destination.
David Camp, CEO of Stanhope, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significant contribution that 1 Undershaft will make to London as a leading global city. He highlighted the substantial amount of commercial space the building will provide, further solidifying London’s position as a world-class business hub.
